Reports to: Research Manager and Senior Data and Research Manager.

Position Overview

The Data Analyst will play a crucial role in supporting the Kenya HealthFin Diaries Research
Project, a longitudinal study aimed at understanding health-related behaviors, expenditures, and outcomes. The analyst will be responsible for managing, cleaning, analyzing, and visualizing large datasets, as well as generating insights to inform project deliverables and stakeholder decisions.

Key Responsibilities

The Data Analyst will:

  • Create and manage a filing system to track and manage all project data in
    line with research protocols.
  • Perform regular checks on household financial data within a specially built
    database application.
  • Correct discrepancies in the data and perform quarterly and as-needed data
    validations in collaboration with investigators and field researchers.
  • Support anonymization of data components as needed, including in the core
    dataset, with photos, and in English transcripts of interview recordings.
  • Write and run queries within the database application to pull data for
    analysis.
  • Create data visualizations for ongoing analysis and public presentations.
  • Contribute to blogs, reports, other written publications and public presentations.
  • Contribute to the production of research instruments within the database application by updating questions, skip patterns, and other setup issues.
  • Maintain the database application as needed and ensure fieldworkers are using the latest versions of all software.
  • Create a clean, anonymized and well-documented limited dataset for public sharing by the end of the project.
  • Conduct general, complementary research activities as needed.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in statistics, finance, economics, data science, or related field;
  • Experience with STATA data analysis and statistical software is required, and experience
    with SQL and Python are advantages;
  • Experience managing large and complex datasets (time series dataset management and
    analysis experience strongly preferred);
  • Experience presenting data in the forms of tables and charts in order to make analytical
    arguments;
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills;
  • Strong communication abilities in English;
  • Strong work ethic and proactive attitude in pointing out challenges and asking questions;
  • Ability to collaborate with a team and also work independently.
